A surge of activity has taken over the Thiruvarangam area, with crowds of women dressed in vibrant yellow sarees flocking to the Thiruvanai temple to purchase kumkum and other sacred items. This gathering has been triggered by astrological warnings issued by Chidambara Kumar, a well-known astrologer from the Guruparvai Astrology Research Center. He pointed out the current unfavorable alignment of Rahu and Ketu, which, according to astrological tradition, can bring misfortune and challenges. As a result, women are rushing to perform rituals that are believed to ward off the malefic effects of this alignment, with yellow sarees, thali ropes, and kumkum being particularly sought after for their auspicious significance during this period.
The women, largely Sumangali (married women), have been especially eager to participate in these rituals, as the astrologer has recommended specific steps to counteract the ill effects of Sarpa Dosha. Kumar’s advice includes offering yellow sarees and kumkum at temples, lighting lamps facing east, and conducting regular prayers to maintain family harmony and avoid misfortune. This rush has caused both excitement and panic, with many women fearing the potential dangers associated with the astrological period. The urgency with which they are performing these rituals highlights the deep-rooted belief in astrology and its influence on daily life, particularly in matters of family, marriage, and health.
Amid this heightened activity, the Thiruvanai temple recently hosted a Thirumanjanam ceremony for one of its deities, adding to the spiritual fervor in the area. The ceremony involved sacred abhishekam, or ritual bathing, with water fetched from the Cauvery River in a silver vessel, marking the occasion with religious significance. Thousands of devotees gathered for the ritual, which further emphasized the temple’s importance as a spiritual hub in times of astrological crisis. The temple’s Joint Commissioner, Jayaraman, oversaw the arrangements, ensuring that the ceremonies ran smoothly amid the large crowds. The combination of the astrological warnings and the temple’s rituals has drawn devotees from far and wide, turning Thiruvarangam into a bustling center of spiritual activity.
However, these astrological predictions came with stern warnings about potential dangers beyond personal misfortune. Kumar has alerted the public to the possibility of natural disasters, accidents, and new diseases during this period. He specifically warned families to be cautious about their children's safety, particularly when traveling. Concerns over water levels rising and the possibility of maritime accidents were also raised. These warnings have heightened the sense of urgency and anxiety among devotees, who are now not only focused on personal and familial protection but are also wary of broader dangers that could affect their communities. As such, the spiritual and ritualistic activities in Thiruvarangam have taken on a larger significance, blending personal devotion with a collective concern for safety and well-being.
